Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: sludge concentration influencing energy efficiency

The effect of sludge concentration on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge was evaluated from energy-efficiency perspective. Mass and energy balance was carried out to investigate the energy yield (in the biogas form) and energy consumption (sludge heating, mixing and heat loss compensation). The results show that energy saving potential contributed by heating sludge with an increased sludge concentration is impressive in particular when the sludge concentration increased from 3 to 6%. The heat loss is also considerable, which accounts for 45.6-70.8% of the energy requirements for heating sludge, in the range of the sludge concentration of 3-10%. The results suggest that appropriate increase of feed sludge concentration is a significant option to improve energy efficiency for AD process.
