The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze operations and performance of special economic zones (SEZ) in Poland over the last 15 years. The idea and approach to special economic zones in Poland evolved significantly. At present, in Poland there are 14 special economic zones, which is much more than it was expected at the beginning of the 1990s when the first zones been set up. This paper presents reseatch findings showing that special economic zones may be an important policy tool in stimulating economic growth and regional development. The authors have analyzed selected factors that have the most significant influence onpotential investors and the size of investments attracted tospecial economic zones. They explore the following most crucial determinants: [a] geographical location(specjal economic zones situatet in south-eastern regions of Poland with reallitively well developed infrastructure and located close to big urban agglomerations managed to attract more investors than the zones located in other regions); [b] attractive and properlly worked out investment offer (easy acces to land and over resources) as well as good collaborsation with local authorities during the whole investment process and later; and[c]labor marcet (its size and the quality). |
