The preliminary results of field-scale experiment on biofiltration of landfill gas, aimed to remove selected volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene, xylenes and p-cymene), are presented in the paper. Examinations were carried out at the closed municipal solid waste landfill in Krasnik. The mixture of municipal solid waste compost with expanded clay pellets (1:1 volumetric ratio) was used as filter bed material. The planned duration time of entire experiment is one year but the presented results refer only to the first two months. The aim of the experiment is to evaluate the biofiltration efficiency of toxic and odorous substances removal from landfill gas in various conditions. In late spring season (May, June), in which the research was carried out, when the average concentrations of benzene, toulene, ethylobenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-cymene were: 3.23; 1.79; 3.52; 2.11; 4.15 and 12.64 mu g m(-3) respectively, any emission of examined compounds from biofilter surface was observed. The gas released from the biofilter did not generate odour nuisance. The rate of trace gas removal determined in batch tests decreased with gas molecular mass growth, reaching the highest values for benzene and toluene and the lowest for xylenes and p-cymene |
