The paper presents the studies on effects of an ion exchange substrate (nutrient carrier) on the root systems development of Dactylis glomerata L. and Lotus corniculatus L. in pot experiments. During the experiments plants were grown on sand (model of degraded soil), and on sand with 2% addition of the ion exchange substrate (Biona-112). The number of roots and total length of roots (from 100-cm2 cross-section of medium) were measured during plant vegetative growth. When the experiments were terminated, the wet and dry biomass of stems and roots were determined. The addition of Biona-112 to sand significantly intensified the root system development of D. glomerata and L. corniculatus. The observed intensification of root system development would favor better stabilization and anti-erosive functions of plants in the biological restoration of degraded sandy soil. |
