Reproducibility of production is one of the key issues which determines the quality and reliability of a product. The blow-by rate is one of the fundamental indicators of proper operation of a ring pack that is an integral part of a combustion engine. The blow-by rate is checked in newly manufactured engines and is usually characterized by significant non-reproducibility. The influence of production tolerances of the piston, piston rings and cylinder on the cross-section areas of the ring-end gaps was analysed on a sample combustion engine and then, using a mathematical model of a ring pack, the influence of the tolerances on the blow-by rate was assessed. The results showed that the blow-by variations related to the said tolerances may reach 40% of the average value, which is a greater value than the actual variations observed in the case of the analysed engine. Significant blow-by variations observed in newly manufactured engines might thus be related to the non-reproducibility of production of the piston assembly elements |
