Facilities related to wastewater management constitute an emission source of nauseating odours. Despite the activities undertaken in recent years towards limiting the odour nuisance, still the complaints are made about wastewater treatment plants and their negative health effects are reported. In the paper are presented some aspects of the assessment of odour annoyance of WWTPs by means of analytical and sensory methods. Sensory techniques include dynamic olfactometry which is widely described in the literature. It is the method recommended for estimation of the nuisance caused by odours. Analytical techniques mainly include gas chromatography and the use of the specific gas sensors. Gas chromatography is a very precise technique used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, however identification of the chemical composition of odorous gas does not allow to determine its odour nuisance. In contrast, the devices equipped with the array of non-specific gas sensors seem to be very promising. |
