Initiated in the 12th century, urban history of the Polonne town shows an interesting example of large-scale fortification. At the end of the 15th century, after the transition of the city to the Ostrogski’s princely dynasty, the city’s rapid economic and demographic growth started. Later, in the 1st half of 16th century, after passing to Lubomirski’s family possession, Polonne town with its castle and several suburbs has become one of the largest towns in the Volhynian land. In 1630–40s, there was established the new city fortifications of the Bastion type on the Pentagon scheme, adapted to the local landscape. However, excessive size of the city-fortress and the weakness of the private garrison have caused repeated captures of the fortress with the Cossack (1649, 1651), Swedish (1708) and Russian (1708, 1768, 1792) troops. From the mid-nineteenth century, the castle and fortifications of Polonne were on the path of gradual decline. Today among the old fortifications, only some fragments of earthen ramparts and bastions have survived. However, archival cartographic sources allow us to investigate the spatial form of this unique defence complex and to recognize it as one of the most interesting examples of defensive architecture on the territory of Ukraine. |
