Water pipe failures and leakages result not only in water and financial losses but also cause danger to personal and property safety due to possible soil suffusion. Thus, water corporations attempt to establish protection zones in vicinity of the pipes. At present, there are no standards that would determine the size of such zones. An analysis of the influence of selected parameters (hydraulic pressure in a water pipe, water table and soil hydraulic conductivity) on water outflow time and location during an underground water pipe failure was presented. Numerical simulation analysis of the 14 variants of a pipe failure, conducted using the FEFLOW v. 5.3 software, indicated influence of all the considered parameters. That influence was more pronounced with reference to the time of water outflow than to its place (within the trench in all the variants considered). The simulation results were empirically verified on the basis of the water outflow time in the controlled water pipe failure scenario under the actual conditions. It should be emphasized that obtained numerical simulation results are an approximation only and do not reflect the actual conditions due to some simplifying assumptions. |
