The results of theoretical and experimental research on a new hot forming process of flat parts with one rib from AZ31 magnes¬ium alloy are presented in the paper. This process is realized with the application of a three-slide forging press equipped with three move-able tools. The rib is formed from a flat billet compressed by side tools. This process can be realized in two variants: semi-free forming and flashless forming. The theoretical analysis of the process was made by means of simulations based on finite element method. The influ¬ence of chosen parameters on the process course, especially on widening of drop forging, rib shape, billet buckling and overlapping pres¬ence, was discussed. Experimental verification of the obtained theoretical solutions was made. During the experiment, forming forces exerted by tools were measured and material flow kinematics was analyzed. Good conformity between experimental and theoretical results was achieved. On the basis of conducted research, important process parameters and limiting phenomena influencing the process course and product quality were determined.
