For the indication of activated sludge condition most often are used organisms present in high abundance. It is Ciliate in most of the cases. However, quite often Testacea reach the considerable abundances and became a part of dominant complex. Most frequently the highest quantities are reached by Arcella vulgaris. Unlike the representatives of Ciliate testate ameba are present in two forms – live cells or empty shells in the activated sludge. The relation of live amoebas to empty shells enables evaluation not only a current condition of the activated sludge, but also allows for some extend the dynamics of the process in the past. The condition of A. vulgaris population can be easily traced not only according to the quantity of live cells but also according to the ratio of live cells towards empty shells. Even by the high quantities of live A. vulgaris the tracing correlation of live vs. dead cells make it possible to detect the oppression of the A. vulgaris population in an early stage of development. The control of ratio between alive and dead Arcella representatives allows to register the oppression of the population much earlier than by accounting of live cells only, as far as their quantity decreases gradually. The dynamic of A. vulgaris population in the conditions of “Hajdow” wastewater treatment plant in Lublin, Poland was studied for two months. According to the results of our investigation, at the WWTPs where A. vulgaris expands in considerable quantities, this organisms can be used for rapid evaluation of biological purification process stability
