Time-dependent quantitative and qualitative diversity of microorganism communities inhabiting field-scale actively vented biofilter for LFG treatment was the subject of the investigations presented in the paper. The examinations were carried out at municipal solid waste landfill, located at the eastern part of Poland. The experimental biofilter (2x2x1.5 m) was filled with a mixture of expanded clay pellets and mature municipal waste compost (1:1 v/v). The total number of microorganisms, fungi and bacteria belonging to genus Pseudomonas were determined in the soil samples taken from the biofilter bed. The total number of bacteria growing on PCA medium varied from 21x104 CFU/g d.w. to 214.2x106 CFU/g d.w., total number of fungi ranged from 14.12x102 CFU/g d.w. to 133.75x103 CFU/g d.w. and the number of bacteria belonging to genus Pseudomonas does not exceed 10.5x103 CFU/g d.w. The bacteria species found in almost all the examined samples were: P. fluorescens, P. putida, P. luteola, Brevundimonas vesicularis, Burkholderia cepacia, Sphingomonas paucimobilis, and Comamonas testosteroni.
