Linear construction projects typically consist of repetitive activities. Schedules of such projects are usually presented graphically in the form of Line of Balance diagrams: a two dimension coordinate system diagram where one axis represents the timeline of the project, and the other identifies units that define the location of works. The integral part of construction project scheduling is the selection of resources and harmonization of their work. The production rate for each activity and the overall project duration are significantly influenced by the crew formation. Crews are composed of available resources. Construction companies tend to reduce the number of permanent employees, which reduces fixed costs, ,but at the same time limits the production capacity. Therefore, construction project planning must be carried out by means of scheduling methods that allow for resource constrains. The authors create a mathematical model for optimized scheduling of linear construction projects with consideration of resources and work continuity constraints. Proposed approach enables the user to select optimal crew formation under limited resource supply. It minimizes project duration and improves resource utilization in construction linear projects. The paper uses the mixed integer linear programming to model this problem and uses a case study to illustrate it. |
