The paper presents an interferometric method of measurement, which makes is possible to determine the spectral dependence of the sensitivity of the phase modal birefringence of polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs) to temperature. The method is based on the Sagnac interferometer, in whose loop only a portion of the tested PMF is subjected to temperature changes. The equation of the method of measuring the temperature sensitivity of the phase modal birefringence was derived. The sensitivity of the phase modal birefringence to temperature is determined based on a measurement of the spectral sensitivity of the interferometer to temperature. Results of measurements of the sensitivity of the birefringence to temperature as a function of wavelength are provided for two types of PM fibers: a conventional Panda-type fiber and a polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF). The results were obtained using the proposed measurement method in the temperature range 22-85 degrees C and in the wavelength range 1280-1580 nm. |
