This study evaluates the impact of a fly ash chemical composition, beidellitic clay addition and microwave heating time on the properties of lightweight aggregates. F class fly ash and fly ash with high carbon content (38%) were used. A waste solution after zeolite synthesis was used as an agglomerating agent. The analyzes showed differences in the chemical composition, mineral composition, microstructure as well as in physical and mechanical properties of produced aggregates. The presence of carbon in high-carbon fly ash caused an increase in the porosity of aggregates which resulted in lower dry particle density (1.92–2.35 g/cm3), apparent particle density (0.63–0.95 g/cm3), and higher water absorption (12–18%), and lower compressive strength in comparison to the aggregates obtained on the basis of class F fly ash. Longer microwave heating time resulted in higher compressive strength. |
