Contemporary innovation processes in regions emerge in a specific system of network connections, where cooperation, in particular between academy, enterprises and the public sector (triple helix) becoming increasingly important. Expanding the triple helix by an additional dimension - society, allows to analyze the dynamics of relationships and interaction in the network from a wider perspective. Among factors determining regional development, special importance is associated to the triple, quadruple or fivefold helix mechanism. According to L. Leydesdorff and H. Etzkowitz, the triple helix is a model of innovation, and its essence is the relationship between the three entities of business, science and administration. The research carried out in the Lublin Region shows that this model allows the formation of a knowledge-based society and knowledge-based democracy. The quadruple helix model (QH) allowed to study the impact of the interaction of four helixes on economic growth generated by continuous investment. The quadruple helix model describes this new economic environment and shows that the entire society is involved in continuous innovation that is the result of co-creation between four helixes connected through a network of partnerships and symbiotic relationships.
The research objectives of programs realized since 2013 at the Lublin University of Technology focused on:
- Diagnosis the level of awareness of the importance of the role of factors influencing the development of cooperation for innovative development of Regions;
- Identifying the structure and importance of factors to set-up and develop social capital as a driving force for regional development; with particular emphasis on barriers.
- Understanding the nature and importance of barriers in shaping social capital in the processes of managing regional development.
