The role of environmental monitoring, paying special attention to analytical chemistry as a basic tool for controlling the degradation of the environment in the realization of sustainable development is discussed in the paper. In addition, it discusses the consumption of natural resources with respect to the two major paradigms of sustainable development: inter-generational and intragenerational justice. It also spotlights the major threats to the realization of sustainable development; in the case of intragenerational justice, the growing gap between the rich and the poor, whilst in the case of inter-generational justice, the exhaustion of basic raw materials and the degradation of the environment through dispersion of these raw materials over the Earth’s surface. One such example is the necessity to control mercury pollution in indoor air due to the widespread use of fluorescent lighting. Analytical tools themselves can contribute to pollution, therefore criteria for the sustainable use of analytical methods also need to be defined. |
