Two types of robust construction TDR soil moisture probes are compared: an antenna and a dagger probes. The main criterion for their development were strong mechanical construction with associated durability in mobile applications and possibility to use standard TDR equipment available in the market. Performance of the probes were tested in frequency domain with FEM digital simulations in the frequency range 4 MHz to 3 GHz using virtual materials with real part of dielectric permittivity changing from that of air and water at room temperature. Then the reflection S11 parameters in frequency domain were converted to time domain using dedicated MatLab procedures. After manufacturing prototypes of the mobile probes, time domain laboratory measurements on wet sand of known dielectric properties were done to compare with simulation data. |
