This article describes a numerical model of the plate-fin air-to-air heat exchanger that can be used in simulations of gas dynamic systems. The model is based on unsteady one-dimensional compressible-flow equations for hot gas and on steady incompressible-flow equations for cold gas. Heat transfer between the two media is computed with the use of experimental Nusselt number correlations. Therefore, geometry and flow parameters of a cooler can be taken into account. The unsteady-flow equations are discretized by a semidiscrete finite-element method. The model has been successively tested in some standard mesh tests and in computer simulations of an exemplary intercooled turbocharging system. The results include predicted heat exchanger wall and cooling-gas temperature distributions and efficiency, predictions of its pressure and temperature courses, predicted volumetric efficiency, and amounts of air charged into engine cylinders under various cooling conditions. |
