Family firms are the dominant form of enterprises in all economies of the world therefore knowledge of their operation is very important. Unfortunately, now this knowledge is highly fragmented, mainly due to definitional ambiguities and a very large variety of family firms. A generally accepted definition and typology of family firms are still lacked, causing theoretical inconsistencies. It also hinders the practical use of research results. This article presents the nature and consequences of the problem and existing approaches in the literature to solve it. Particular emphasis was placed on the approach to the typology of family firms, because according to current trends, the appropriate differentiation of family firms and combining them into the right types is more important than the definition itself. The article ends with conclusions from the analysis of literature, which include the identification of defects in the existing typologies of family firms, and guidance for their effective development. |
