The topic of the present paper is the quality problem of hammer forgings made of aluminium alloys. Coarse grain structure areas resulting in reduced mechanical properties have been detected in the forgings. Grain growth during the forming process of aluminium alloys has been subjected to analysis. Violent grain growth has been found within ranges of small strains (called critical strains). The forging process was simulated for selected forgings using the finite-element method (FEM). Process modelling was based on the actual forming process of the forgings being analysed. Critical strain areas coinciding with coarse grain structure ranges in the forged part under analysis could be determined by means of the calculation results obtained. It has been found that such areas are the result of the hammer forging process being less favourable than the press forming process. Due to proper coincidence of theoretical results with industry practice, it can be concluded that the forecasting of structural defects by means of FEM is possible for forgings made of aluminium alloys during the forging process design stage. |
