The assessment of a potential impact of drilling waste on the water and soil environments was the aim of the study. Two types of drill cuttings different in terms of the chemical and physical parameters, were examined in the batch leaching tests conducted in distilled water and acid solutions (initial pH ∼5.0). The mobility of ten heavy metals and six other chemical elements, as well as organic substances (indicated as TOC) were determined. It was found that the tested waste did not pose a threat to the environment due to the mobility of Cu, Co, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Zn but, may be considered as hazardous because of the high content of organic substances and elevated leachability of Ba, Cd, Cr, Na and Tl. Additionally, it was observed that acidification increased the leachability of almost all the examined metals; however, it reduced the leaching of the organic compounds. |
