Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) is a phenomenon of a sudden decrease in the pressure inside a liquid medium causing the formation of vapour and gas bubbles having a tremendous force of implosion. The basic concept of practical application of the cavitation is to employ these specific conditions and huge energy released by cavities in a positive way. The paper provides an overview of the latest applications of hydrodynamic cavitation in environmental engineering. The major applications of HC in wastewater treatment and degradation of different organic compounds (i.e. pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes) were presented. The challenges and prospects of HC applications in decomposition of lignocelluloses biomass, a pretreatment of biomass for biofuel production, and also water and wastewater disinfection were also discussed. Further, the optimization of geometrical and operating parameters was summarize and various designs of cavitation devices that affect the cavitation effectiveness were shown. |
