Poly methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) is one of the most commonly used polymer composite mate-
rials in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. However, these materials can be subjected to changes in its
mechanical properties, when exposed to aggressive environment of human body, and therefore to loos-
ening, which requires revision surgery. Therefore in recent years, multiple researchers have investigated
effect of adding various particles to PMMA to enhance its mechanical properties. In our study we
have evaluated the effect on mechanical properties of PMMA/HA bone cement composite by adding
different gain size hydroxyapatite (HA) to commercially available PMMA (Heraeus Palamed). Samples
were subjected to compressive loading, which reflects typical conditions in human body after implanta-
tion of joint prosthesis. Hydroxyapatite with granulation of 5 (HA5) microns and 10 (HA10) microns.
Hydroxyapatite as a natural compound of bone can improve biocompatibility of bone cements, which
would prolong total joint replacement (TJR) survival rate. However, adding HA to PMMA can influence
its mechanical properties. In our study we have analysed effect of adding HA in 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10%
of dry mass. Our analysis revealed that only adding 2% of HA had significant impact on mechanical
properties of PMMA. Other configurations showed no effect on PMMA properties.
