Preventing or mitigating overheating in homes is one of the key climate emergency-related challenges with potentially negative health consequences and environmental impact. Analysis of data from six low-energy owner-occupied homes focuses on the identification of exceedances of the upper limits of the adaptive thermal comfort model. The comparison involves variation between homes but also between different spaces within the homes. The study aims are twofold. The first is to provide empirical evidence from warm temperate climatic zone housing in the free-running mode to evaluate the need for air conditioning. Secondly, the aim is to identify whether the location within a building is a determinant of overheating risk or if user-related factors can dominate the standard assumptions in that respect. The results suggest the key role of orientation on the internal profile, however, the ground floor location is not always associated with fewer overheating instances. Also, less overheating is observed in households that secured solar gain prevention potential of window treatments. Importantly the study found that it was possible to retain a comfortable thermal environment without the use of active cooling, but that was only achieved in one household over the entire monitoring period. |
