The growing interest in environmental protection has resulted in numerous
studies devoted to advanced materials made from natural raw materials, such as
polymer-matrix composites. Production of materials based on renewable and
natural waste materials has become an area of interest for many scientists involved
in materials engineering and polymer processing around the world [1-3].
The aim of the work was to produce samples of low-density polyethylene
composite containing natural waste fillers and to determine how immersion of
these materials in various solvents will affect their surface properties [2].
Surface roughness is one of the components of the description of deviations
of the surface shape from its ideal form. Surface roughness parameters are used
to assess the geometric structure of a given surface. The surface roughness results
showed that all tested parameters, i.e. Ra, Rz, Rmax, Rq, RSm, increased compared
to the results obtained for the samples before immersion in the solvent. The liquids
reduced the surface quality of the samples. The highest values of surface
roughness parameters were obtained for samples immersed in toluene.
The polymer composite samples were also examined for surface
topography. The analysis of surface topography confirmed that immersed
materials have the worst surface quality.
