Effect of 160 MeV xenon ion irradiation on the crystal structure and tribological properties of Inconel 718 superalloy

| This study investigated the effects of high-energy xenon ion irradiation (160 MeV) on the tribological properties and crystalline structure of the Inconel 718 superalloy. Samples were exposed to 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 × 1014 Xe24+/cm2 ion fluences. General changes in the crystalline structure were observed down to a depth of 0.15 μm, and noticeable wear resistance alterations occurred at depths well beyond the initial ion implantation range. Performed microhardness tests revealed significant differences in the mechanical properties of the alloy post-irradiation. The study confirms the presence of a long-range effect, demonstrating changes in tribological properties at depths significantly exceeding the penetration range of the implanted xenon ions, suggesting potential applications in enhancing the durability of materials under extreme conditions. |
