| Casein as a protein biopolymer was used for modification of post-consumer recycled un-saturated polyester resin (UPR) from water bottles. The biocomposites were prepared by mixing UPR with various casein contents up to 15% (w/w) and polymerized. The obtained samples were tested for the effect of the biofiller incorporation on mechanical and thermal properties as well as morphology, wettability, and surface durability. The changes in the wetting angles of the cured resin and its composites with casein are noteworthy. An increase in the value of the water contact angle from 57.0° for the pure UPR to 71.8° for the largest filler content composite (UPR + 15) indicates that the surface wettability of these materials becomes lower. The contact angle of the diiodomethane droplet showed a decrease up to 33° for a hybrid composite with the 15 wt.% casein content. Casein addition affects the gloss of the sample surface. All the obtained samples can be classified as possessing high gloss. They are characterized by good mechanical properties with the exception of Charpy impact strength. |
