| Ancient maps remain understudied documents that contain specific spatial information about the state of the mapped territory. One such document is Rudolf Ritter von Otto's 1772 map, specifically its sheet (Litt: I. No: 9), which depicts the city of Lviv and its surroundings. This map has served and will continue to serve as an object of interdisciplinary research by historians, geographers, architects, and urban planners. The research was carried out in GIS by comparing the map under study with other cartographic materials from the last third of the 18th century, as well as with the modern topographic base. Significant spatial distortions in the representation of objects on the map were identified, and probable causes for this were established. The location of August Moshinsky's palace was identified not on the territory of the historical buildings of the National University “Lviv Polytechnic”, but next to the modern Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street in Lviv. The peculiarities of the quartering of Austrian troops in Lviv and its surroundings in 1772 are explained. R. R. von Otto's map is a valuable historical and cartographic source in urban planning research, as it contains many valuable details of the situation (settlements, streets and roads, individual buildings, monuments, etc.) that may not be found in other cartographic documents of that time. The landscape elements, castles, and palace and courtyard complexes of the former outskirts of Lviv (now its peripheral areas) depicted on the map can be taken into account in scientific and design work on urban transformations, the restoration of natural complexes, and the regeneration of the historical environment. |
