| Raw clay is a material used in natural construction, in combination with organic fillers such as straw. A mixture of clay and organic filler is used as a filling of frame walls or for the production of unfired bricks/blocks. An example of a filler of plant origin with high porosity is hemp shives, used e.g. in hemp concrete based on lime. However, materials based on unfired clay are not resistant to the effects of water. To counteract this, various modifications are used to stabilize the properties of clay, including improving its resistance to water washing. Examples of such stabilizers are biopolymers based on polysaccharides. This work focuses on the modification of the clay-hemp composite with corn starch. Biopolymer in the amount of 15% of the clay mass was used as its partial replacement. Two methods of preparation of the samples with corn starch were undertaken - natural drying, and drying at 105 °C for the first 24 hours. The effectiveness of composite modification was assessed based on the capillary rise test. Additionally, due to the anisotropy of the shives, the influence of the compaction direction on the ability to transport water by capillary action was also checked. The results were related to the basic parameters of the material, such as bulk density and porosity. |
