| The text in this volume is the second part of the story of the famous Hess Scales Factory in Lublin dating back to 1870. Wilhelm Hess arrived in Lublin for a temporary stay and spent the next 18 years gaining experience in the production of scales, and from 1888 he started transforming Lubartowska Street into a thriving industrial district. The complex departed from the standard industrial architecture of the time. The buildings were connected by a narrow-gauge rail, both on the ground level and on purpose-built passages on the first floor. Lifts were also necessary. Although scales were the main product, the factory manufactured all kinds of items. From enormous lathe beds to mechanical anvils, to precise scales and printing plates for company letterheads. Production required only ore and the rest was made internally. The factory received its first blow when the First World War came and it ran out of production resources while the machinery inventory shrank by 60%. Production was halted in 1931 and a year later the company declared bankruptcy. The Credit Association (Towarzystwo Kredytowe), which took over the buildings, gradually sold them, resulting in the current split ownership. After the Second World War the buildings which had served industrial purposes were nationalised and used for a variety of business activities. |
