| The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of the pot life of two epoxy adhesive compounds on the shear strength of adhesive joints for various types of construction materials. Experimental tests involved measuring the strength and deformation of joints bonded with two two-component epoxy adhesives at five different pot lives. The adhesives were based on two types of modified epoxy resins manufactured from Bisphenol A (BPA) and amine cured with triethylenetetramine. Shear strength tests were performed on EN AW-5754 aluminium alloy and PE HD 500 polyethylene. The results indicate that adhesive compositions should not be used immediately after mixing or after their pot life has expired, as this generally results in a reduction in the strength of adhesive joints. In terms of achieving adequate adhesive strength, it is beneficial to use pot life times in the recommended mid-range. In the analyzed cases, these were approximately 30–45 min for the epoxy adhesives analyzed. For example, when bonding aluminum alloy sheets with an epoxy adhesive containing Epidian 57 epoxy resin, the strength of the adhesive joints was half as high for a pot life of 30–45 min compared to a pot life of 5 min, and for the epoxy adhesive containing Epidian 57 resin, it was 30% higher for these times. The novelty of this study lies in the simultaneous consideration of the influence of not only the technological factor, which is the adhesive pot life, but also the effect of material factors: the type of an adhesive (type of an epoxy resin) and the type of an adherend in evaluating the mechanical performance of epoxy adhesive joints. |
