| Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly significant role in the development of smart cities, offering opportunities to enhance the efficiency of urban infrastructure management, transportation, public safety, and residents’ quality of life. Despite its promising potential, the implementation of AI applications faces numerous barriers. The aim of this article is to identify the limitations associated with the deployment of AI technologies within the smart city framework. The article poses a key research question: what are the limitations in implementing AI technologies in smart cities? The study was conducted using a quantitative method (CAWI) among 1,500 residents of voivodeship capital cities in Poland. The analysis incorporated secondary data obtained through desk research (a review of scientific literature) as well as primary data collected via a diagnostic survey. To process the primary data, factor analysis was applied to identify and categorize key factors influencing the barriers to implementing AI applications in smart cities. The results indicate that barriers to AI implementation in Polish smart cities can be classified into four main categories: technological and infrastructural, social and perceptual, legal and regulatory, and organizational and managerial. |
