This paper describes the principles of the pH-drift method which is an improper method to determine the (apparent) PZC, and stresses its weak points. The pH-drift method sometimes called “immersion technique” has been known for many decades, and it was criticized by Alwitt already 54 years ago. This criticism was repeated by many others in their quite old and very recent papers. Recently the pH-drift method gained a great popularity in spite of this criticism. The apparent PZC derived by the pH-drift method are influenced by various phenomena, and the pH-dependent surface charging is only one of them. The apparent PZC values obtained by “pH-drift method” for the same material can vary significantly depending on experimental conditions such as equilibration time, ionic strength, or solid-to-liquid ratio. Therefore, they must not be considered as well-defined quantities characterizing the material. In contrast, the point of zero charge is a well-established physical quantity which, under appropriate boundary conditions, is independent of the specific method used to determine it and of the aforementioned experimental parameters. The “pH-drift method” is not generally recommended as a proper approach for determining the true point of zero charge. Consequently, passing the results obtained by “pH-drift method” as apparent “points of zero charge” is confusing and harmful.
