| Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials worldwide, but its production has a significant environmental impact, primarily from cement-related CO2 emissions and the extraction and transport of aggregates. This study investigates the influence of two coarse aggregate types on the mechanical performance of concrete and its potential implications for sustainability. Two concretes were compared: one containing natural river gravel and the other crushed dolomite aggregate. Mixtures for both concretes were designed with the same maximum aggregate size of 16 mm. Aggregate properties, including porosity, crushing strength, and surface roughness, were evaluated. The results indicated that concrete with dolomite aggregate exhibited improved mechanical properties compared to concrete with natural gravel. Despite lower crushing resistance, the higher roughness of dolomite aggregate enhanced the bond between the grains and the cement matrix. This led to increased compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness of concrete. The findings suggest that crushed dolomite aggregate can improve concrete quality and potentially extend the service life of structural members. Consequently, selecting appropriate aggregate types may contribute to more durable and environmentally sustainable concrete structures, although detailed analyses are required for specific applications. |
