To elucidate the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of constant inner diameter hollow axles fabricated by three-roll flexible skew rolling (TRSR), 30NiCrMoV12 alloy steel was investigated through hot compression tests, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) modeling, finite element simulations, rolling experiments, EBSD characterization, and tensile tests. The flow behavior under different deformation conditions was obtained, and DRX models for critical strain, recrystallized fraction, and grain size were established and implemented into the FORGE software to develop a thermomechanically coupled TRSR model. The model was validated by comparing the predicted macroscopic geometry, tool loads, temperature fields, and microstructures with experimental results. Based on the validated model, the effects of feed angle, chuck axial velocity, and initial billet temperature on DRX behavior and grain evolution were systematically analyzed. Results show that increasing the feed angle and chuck axial velocity decreases strain accumulation and DRX cycles, leading to grain coarsening and reduced microstructural uniformity. The initial billet temperature exhibits a competitive effect between DRX activation and grain growth. Mechanical tests demonstrate that grain refinement effectively improves yield strength and tensile strength while maintaining good ductility. Notably, hollow axles produced at lower chuck axial velocity achieve a better balance between strength and ductility. This study provides insights into optimizing TRSR parameters for coordinated control of microstructure and mechanical performance.
