Biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration, including polymer-based composites, are typically evaluated in vitro prior to the clinic al tria ls. Howeve r, such compo site s test ed in vivomay beh ave different due to the specif ic body conditions. For example, some composites implanted into the tissue acidified due to transient posto perative inflammation may un expectedly swell which de lays the wound heali ng. Such mass ive swellin g in acidic medium was previ ously observed for new elast ic hydroxyapatite (HAp)/b-glucan biom aterial. However , in furtherclinical cases conce rning the composite implantat ion in patients without significant inflammation indicators, n o side effects were observed . Therefore, it was reasonable to test the effect of human serum of neutral pH (typical for noninflame d tissue s) on the compos ite par ameters , in particula r volume changes. Thus, this article shows the characterization of physicochem ical parameters of the composite after incubation (5 days) in human serum of neutral pH by means of weight and volume measure- ment, s canning electron microsc opy, X- ray diffra ction, Fourier- trans form infrare d spectrosc opy, micro comput ed tomogra phy, mercur y intrusion, and biochemica l techniques. Results showed that human serum colle cted from healthy people cau sed no uncont rolled change s in w eight and volume, porosi ty and mecha nical properti es of the composite . Therefor e, this sug- gests the lack of volume change-related side effects of HAp/glu- can composi te in bone defects treatm ent if postoperat ive inflammation is prevented.VC2018 Wiley Period icals, Inc.
