| Clay is a material used in construction mainly for the production of wall ceramics (bricks, hollow blocks), as well as for the production of light expanded aggregate. The use of clay in these cases requires the use of significant amounts of energy in the firing process. It is also possible to use clay in a sustainable manner, i.e. in raw, unfired form, and additionally obtained locally. It is used in interior plasters and masonry mortars. It can also be used as a binder in shive-based composites and in the rammed earth technique. The low water resistance of raw clay limits its use for interior use. It is important to look for ways of modification to improve the behavior of the material in contact with water. Hydraulic binders and impregnating admixtures (including natural ones, such as linseed oil) are used. The study examined a mixture of clay and fine hemp shives for use in the production of unfired bricks or a monolith using the rammed earth technique. The use of hemp shives to improve thermal insulation and reduce shrinkage. Animal protein was used as an admixture, the aim of which was to improve the resistance to water and reduce the absorptivity of the composite. Bulk density, thermal conductivity coefficient, capillary rise and weight loss due to water exposure were examined. |
