| The estimation of the refractive index from TFBG optical spectra is commonly achieved by calculating the lower and upper envelopes of the cladding modes. New methods using signal processing algorithms or highly complex techniques, such as machine learning or deep neural networks, have been developed. In this letter, a simple alternative to the spectrum length demodulation method is proposed. This algorithm uses the Hilbert transform of the measured spectrum. After this processing, the spectra’s shapes resemble those after first-order differentiation. However, derivatives calculated using simple methods such as the first-difference method are sensitive to noise. The Hilbert transform method is free of this drawback. The spectral parameter from which the refractive index is determined is the sum of the transformed spectra. We demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the spectrum length method, even when denoising filtering is applied. |
