The article presents the results of three power-assisted cold start-up systems of the modern diesel engine based on the glow plugs in the combustion chamber and the glow plugs with heating coil and flame glow plugs placed in the intake system. The object of the research was GAZ Gazelle van fitted with an engine ADCRANDORIA that meets exhaust emission standard Euro-4. Originally the engine is equipped with glow plugs. Engine start-up was performed after a minimum of 8 hours stop at a temperature of engine of 0° C. We analyzed the rate of start-up, load of the electrical system and toxic exhaust emissions. Cold start system with glow plugs with heating coil most overlodes the vehicle wiring system. In other way, its application can reduce emissions of toxic components. An alternative to cold-start systems containing energy-intensive heating elements is system with flame glow plug. However, its use increases by 31% emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and almost 10 times the value of the instantaneous smoke
