| Low-cost optical tomography could enable mobile and edge-based anomaly detection, material monitoring, and smart spaces, but practical applications are limited by scattering, sensor sparsity, calibration drift, and computational constraints. We present preliminary research on an edge-enhanced optical tomography platform that combines a lightweight optical sensor prototype with a digital twin, a proprietary Monte Carlo method for calibration, and synthetic data generation. Our results demonstrate how material inhomogeneities affect photon transport and detector response, motivating a hybrid reconstruction process that balances accuracy, latency, and energy consumption. The paper demonstrates a roadmap for simulation-to-reality evaluation using optical phantoms and embedded hardware, targeting reliable inclusion detection in sensor-based setups. |
